VFM2500 2.4GHz - 2.7GHz WiMAX/WiFi Front End RFIC
World's first intelligent silicon RF Front End IC for 4G broadband mobile wireless devices
The VT Silicon VFM2500 WiMAX/WiFi Front End RFIC offers best in class performance combined with an extensive set of digital, analog, and software definable features focused at providing the absolute maximum battery life for mobile devices. The VFM2500 integrates all of the active RF front end functions (2 PAs for transmit diversity, 2 LNAs for RX MIMO, T/R and antenna diversity switches, GPIO digital control, programmable analog test points, serial communications interface) on a single silicon die with all passives (TX and RX filters and baluns) embedded in a 5mm x 5.5mm x 1mm, 30-pin QFN package. The BOM is minimal as only two external bypass capacitors are required. The VFM2500 is the world’s first intelligent, programmable Front End RFIC that provides real-time, granular control of critical operating parameters (PA bias, TX power mode, PA bypass, LNA bias) via a high speed serial interface (SPI) for communications with the baseband processor chip. The “Dynamic Performance Optimization” (DPO™) feature allows the VFM2500 to be re-programmed on a burst-by-burst basis to achieve absolute lowest power consumption based on variables such as battery voltage, frequency, TX power level, and ambient temperature. PA transmit diversity is achieved by using a separate PA for each antenna which reduces the power loss after the PA.
The VFM2500 achieves an extremely low quiescent current (Icq) of <45mA in low-power TX mode. In high power Tx mode, it can deliver 23dBm (min) at the antenna port while consuming 400mA from a 3.3V supply meeting a 4% EVM and the WiMAX Forum™ Spectral Emission Mask . Software definable GPIO pins are provided for TX power control, TX antenna select, RX gain, and sleep mode.
The VFM 2500 is currently under development. Samples will be available to strategic partners in 2nd quarter of 2010.
